What would be your ideal COMSOL workstation?

Hello all,

I am in the process of building my own COMSOL workstation, and am looking for advice. If you were building your own computer from scratch, what parts would you be sure to get (besides a supercomputer, of course)?

COMSOL's list of system requirements is pretty basic -- 1 GB of memory, 1-4 GB of hard disk space. I'd like to run 3D simulations with multiple physics, and also use parametric sweeps for optimization. Mainly, I'm looking to solve simulations as fast as I can.

Does anyone have any hardware recommendations?

Is there a noticeable difference between 64 bit and 32 bit performance?

Any speed differences between Windows (XP or 7) and Linux?

Optimal graphics card and memory size?

Number of cores?

I'm currently looking at an Intel quad-core processor and 8 GB of memory running 64-bit Windows 7. What do you all think?

COMSOL 4.2a with MATLAB (COMSOL 3.5a compatibility) error

Hi, I'm trying to use COMSOL 4.2a with MATLAB (COMSOL 3.5a compatibility) and I obtained the following error:

Undefined variable "com" or class "com.femlab.jni.FlNativeUtil.ensureLibIsLoaded".
Error in initcomsol (line 105)
com.femlab.jni.FlNativeUtil.ensureLibIsLoaded();

And for example when I type fem.geom=circ2, this is the error:

Undefined variable "com" or class "com.femlab.util.Prop".

Can anybody help me?
Thanks.

converting COMSOL code to the MATLAB ???

Hello,

I'm working with COMSOL to simulate a chemical experience, but it takes too much time to display the results.
So i want to find a link between comsol and matlab if i can convert the code of comsol to matlab that will be faster than using comsol alone !!!
So am asking if i can do this and how ????

thank you very much :)

No speedup when using distributed memory cluster

I wanted to see if someone could help me determine why I am not seeing any speedup when I submit jobs on multiple nodes of my HPC cluster (using the distributed memory capability).

I understand that speedup is highly model dependent. Per the suggestions of previous discussion threads, I have tried numerous different models with different physics (both linear and non-linear problems). Also, I have tried large memory models and small memory models (also per previous thread recommendations). Below are my results using the COMSOL Model Library Example "Micromixer Cluster Version":

Micromixer_cluster.mph (mesh as given):
1 node; 1 proc.: Run time = 123 sec
1 node; 12 proc.: Run time = 38 sec
4 nodes; 12 ppn: Run time = 99 sec
8 nodes; 12 ppn: Run time = 223 sec

I see speedup when I go from 1 proc. to 12 proc. running on 1 node (shared memory), but I don't see speedup, in fact I see slowdown, when I try to distribute the job across multiple nodes (distributed memory). The step-by-step instructions said to try refining the mesh for better speedup (this was also COMSOL support's recommendation). Here are the results for 2 different refined meshes:

Micromixer_cluster.mph (refined mesh):
1 node; 1 proc.: Run time = 566 sec
1 node; 12 proc.: Run time = 130 sec
4 nodes; 12 ppn: Run time = 259 sec
8 nodes; 12 ppn: Run time = 501 sec

Micromixer_cluster.mph (super-refined mesh):
1 node; 1 proc.: Run time = 1169 sec
1 node; 12 proc.: Run time = 414 sec
4 nodes; 12 ppn: Run time = 614 sec
8 nodes; 12 ppn: Run time = 896 sec

Still no speedup. Only slowdown.

Has anyone seen any speedup on this COMSOL Model Library example? If so, I'd be interested in your results.

One thing that I am doing that is different than the COMSOL recommendation is submitting jobs through the command line rather than through the Desktop. Does anyone know why COMSOL recommends submitting batch cluster jobs through the Desktop and not through the command line? Could this be my issue?

Any help would be appreciated.

FSI license question

Hello Everybody -
I'm new in Comsol world. So far, so good. Small question:

Can I do FSI (fluid structure interaction) without the Structural Mechanics Module?

I ask this, because everytime I tried to open a file from tutorials about FSI I got a license error message: " could not obtain license for Strcutural Mechanics Module"

Thanks,
Santiago

Problem with save file

I'm very new in COMSOL, I'm sorry in case of stupid questions.

I installed COMSOL 4.2a in windows7 with a floating license, I'm trying just to open an example and then to save in a work directory (on a different hard disk) , even without any modification. I get that COMSOL crash (the window becomes white with the message COMSOL stop working, windows is looking for solution bla bla bla).
Additional information: even if the OS is 64 bit, I'm oblige to use the 32 bit version of the program since for the 64 version the program starts (I can see the splash), but immeditely stops without any message.

Thanks,

Gianluca

Dear all,

I am runnning comsol/4.2.0.228 on a machine and submit a batch job to my university cluster running comsol/4.2.1.116. However, afterwards, I cannot open the output.mph on my local machine anymore... And it opens without troubles on the cluster...

What would you suggest to solve the issue?

Best,

Specs for HPC

hello!

my university wants to buy a little hpc for comsol.
at the moment we are simulating several problems with magnetic fields and plasma.

at the moment our configuration is:
4* AMD Opteron 6272 2,1GHz G34 16C
16* 8GB DDR3 FSB1600 240-pin REG x4 2R
WindowsServer 2008 R2 Enter,64bit

in my opinion there are several things to improve:
-> more ram (minimum 4gb per core?)
->2*256gb ssd only for swap
-> instead of windowsserver linux? (because of better performance?)
->would it be better to use xenons? (found this benchmark for floatingpointoperations http://www.tecchannel.de/bild-zoom/2016541/10/2157055/d2e2117-media/)
-> would it be cheaper to buy normal pcs with core i7 and connect them over the network?

it would be really nice if someone could share his experience with hpc for comsol.

Memory

Hi
I would like to make the calculation speed up. In order to do so, I installed memories (changed 2GB to 24GB) in my computer. But it looks like the speed did not change so much. I would appreciate it if you could tell me how to make the calculation speed up.
Is it pointless to install much memory to improve the calculation speed?

Suggestions for a computer

Hi,

I'm looking for suggestions for a computer that will primarily run COMSOL and Matlab.
My budget is 10k and I will probably get a Windows machine.

My first thought was an HP Z 800series and just maxing out the RAM for my budget.

thanks!!

Comsol slower in Linux?

hello!

my specs:
intel i7-3610QM up to 3.2 GHz
32gb 1600MHz Ram
2*128Gb crucial M4 ssd
500gb HDD

My simulations in comsol need a lot of RAM and SWAP so i decided to install Linux Mint (faster version of ubuntu) on my laptop using one 128Gb SSD only for SWAP.

Calculating a magnetic field simulation with 4.4 mio elements:
Windows 7: 29 min
Mint: 34 min

Now theres the question why linux is slower than windows 7. normally it should be faster...

is there a way to report in comsol how long each step of the solution was?
e.g.: compiling equation 2 min
linear solver 20 min
and so on.

Or are here some people with the same result?

qlogicmpi_gnu-0.1.0
qlogicmpi_intel-0.1.0
qlogicmpi_pathscale-0.1.0
qlogicmpi_pgi-0.1.0

i haven't found any information how to run comsol with one of those cluster mpis.

does anybody know how to run comsolsol with one of those?

Hi
is there anyway to create the simulation by programming your code instead of using the mouse
like you can do for example with ansys?

v4.3, infiniband, RHEL cluster

Hello COMSOL users:

I am having some trouble with the subject configuration. The new version 4.3 of COMSOL is not able to directly find the infiniband drivers on our RHEL 5.8 cluster. COMSOL tech support is helping us tremendously, and we have identified a workaround. However, we suspect a RHEL configuration issue and would like to avoid the workaround. Are there any other users who have similar problems ? We want to avoid updating to RHEL 6+ if possible, but will do so if necessary for COMSOL in the long run.

Flexera lmadmin with COMSOL

Hello,
I am attempting to serve my COMSOL FNL license using Flexera's new lmadmin tool, instead of the old lmgrd daemon that ships with the COMSOL installer. It seems to work, but I have run in to the following issues:

1. When importing the License.dat file, there is an "inconsistent server port" error, unless I delete the SERVER port (1718) from the License.dat file. The error is thrown despite the fact that I changed the "License Server Manager Port" to 1718 in the "License Server Configuration" section of the FlexNet License Administrator tool.

2. When installing the COMSOL software on a client computer, I must use 1719 (the LMCOMSOL daemon port) instead of 1718 (the license server manager port) when specifying the license server port number and host name, otherwise the license is not found.

So far, the two work-arounds described above seem to work (i.e., delete the SERVER port number from the license file, and point clients directly to the vendor daemon port, 1719). However, I would appreciate any insight that anybody may be able to provide (as to why these issues occurred), and especially any warnings about possible future problems that may result from the work-arounds I have proposed.

Thanks,

JK

Dear COMSOL users,

A new software update is now available, version 4.3 Update 2:
http://www.comsol.com/support/updates/comsol43p2/

We recommend everybody to update now.

This update corrects several bugs and stability issues in COMSOL 4.3. The update is cumulative; that is, it applies to both COMSOL 4.3 and COMSOL 4.3 Update 1 and includes all updates from the previous Update 1.
